I have just bought a Acer laptop which has an Express card /54 slot.Could anyone explain what this means as I have not got a clue what it is for.

It's a PCMCIA slot that can take add on cards.

These cards can slot into the express slot of the machine to give a wide selection of devices. The sizes come in 34mm and 54mm click here

The Express Card standard is the successor to PCMCIA (PC Card). It is a smaller 26 pin design, about 34mm wide. PC Cards are 54mm wide with 98 pins. The Express Card 54's name is a little misleading because it fits into the same slot and still has 26 pins, but is in an L-shape that is 54mm at the widest part. A Universal slot can support both versions.
