Explorer.exe errors when going to certain screens

When I go to the configuration panel with the mouse, I get an error message saying that explorer.exe has encountered problems and is closing down. Then the computer restarts. I get this problem not only on this screen but on some others. I've looked at the error codes and it tells me ID code 1000; but can anyone tell me what the hell this means? The microsoft site isn't very helpful and I want to avoid rebooting as windows xp already came preinstalled and I don't have any cds. Help!

Hi Lostinspace. It may be a system file has gone wrong. If you've got a restore disc I don't know if you can repair or run sfc. Try reinstalling mouse driver 1st. Or have i got it wrong and you're on a network?

I had a problem with explorer.exe crashing a while back. It turned out to be a corrupt video file on my pc.
