after using avg i seemed to have lost explorer.exe and need to replace it or find it....any help please

Have you tried typing in explorer.exe in Windows Task Manager ?

It used to work for me when I was on XP.

I'm working from memory but I think the RUN command was in the FILE menu (I'm on Vista now)

Create a shortcut to C:\windows\explorer.exe on your desktop.
That will call the Explorer routine.

It is posible you have malware blocking Explorer from running, in which case I would suggest running programs like A2free (virus checker), Spybot, Adaware to remove any malware from your system.
If your system has been damaged, you may need to run a repair, for that you will need the XP CD.
