Excessive floppy disk/hard drive noise.

On more than one occasion when i have taken a floppy out of my hard drive there has been a continous 'motoring' sound from within my CPU. If you imagine the sound a floppy makes when you open it from Explorer and imagine this as continous sound you will have an idea. Alternately it is the sound of the hard drive going into overthink-with absolutely no breaks in the sound.
The only way to stop it is to press the reset button or power button on the CPU (before it takes off)thus losing my work. Anyone had a similar experience. No damage to the PC- boots up OK but it just doesn't sound too healthy.

Most of the major drive manufacturers have diagnostic software for checking out their HDD's.
Seagate have an online checker with their Seatools
diagnostics.
