Can anyone help. I am trying to use different colours to identify data in a range of cells. The data is numeric and the colours are specific to the data. i.e yellow identifies gas bill blue electric bill green shopping and so on. Although I can create a macro for this exercise I cannot find the formula. All the data will be in one colunm and the total spend would be referenced in a single cell.

Is there another column containing "Gas", "Electric", "Shopping" and so on?

If so, you can use Conditional Formatting of the numeric cells, using the Formula Is option (drop down on the dialog box) and referring to the "Gas" etc. entries.
