Excel query - Opening same doc multiple times

Does anyone know if you can have an Excel document saved on a network drive, get about three people to all open it and keep all their changes at the same time?

Usually you get the whole "This document is locked for editing etc" box - is there any way around this? I'm aware it will cause people problems if they edit sections of the doc that others are doing, but this won't be an issue.

I don't think so, the logistics of ensuring that multiple people's edits are handled correctly preclude such a scenario.

When the document is opened by one person, it is downloaded into PC memory, and changes are made there, that is why you are prompted to "save" when you exit, to replace the file on the hard disk.

There is no concept of a "master program" looking after what specific parts of the document are saved by each user, the whole of the excel file is saved.

What you are proposing I suspect is possible with Access and/or a SQL database, although I'm a novice in this area.
