Excel Query

I am preparing a very long matrix and would like to have a cell at the top of each column change colour (conditional formatting) or enter a character e.g "X" if the column contains data - either text or numbers.

This way I would hope to be able to move accross the spreadsheet and see what columns have no data.

In A1

=IF(COUNTA(A2:A100)>0,"X","")

and drag across.
