I have an excel problem and I would appreciate it if someone could help me out.

I have a large spreadsheet in which I would like to limit what can be entered in a particular cell, lets say for instance 5 fruits, an apple, an orange, a pear, a strawberry and a cherry. I would like these 5 fruits to be available from a drop down menu from that cell so that I can only choose one of those items to fill the cell and so would be unable to type any free text in the cell. If anybody can understand what I am saying the help would be appreciated.

Type Data Validation into the Help box. No need for drop-downs.

Enter the values you want to appear in your cell(s) elsewhere on the sheet in a column.

From the Menu bar select Data> Validation.

In the box that opens, under Allow, select List.

Click in Source and drag your mouse over the list you created above.

This will restrict the cell input to the values you specified in your list.

I have tried this method of selecting a value, but if I use Validation and select from a list and put the cell range in,eg a1:a5, this appears in the drop down box, rather than the actual items? How do I get the text values to appear in the drop down? Thanks David

You have probably not put "=a1:a5" in the validation "source" field.

The "=" is required.

However, if you use mouse to select the range for you, as in "Click in Source and drag your mouse over the list you created above." from pc moron, this does it for you, and prevents typing errors.
