Excel Outlook or me?

Strange things happening. A colleague sent me an Excel workbook with several worksheets as an email attachment. I saved the attachment (File/Save Attachment)as usual but when I opened it in Excel some data in the middle of two of the sheets was missing. However if I double clicked the attachment in Outlook and opened it that way, the missing data was there but if I saved it and then opened it in Excel, data was missing again. My mate renamed the file, re-sent it and all was well. It doesn't matter as I have all the data now but how can that happen? I've been around computers for yonks but can't understand this one. Any thoughts from you experts out there?
