hi novice excell user here,is it possible to search in a specific column in a spreadsheet.
the spreadsheet contains product codes and discriptions as well as cost price in seperate columns basically i want to search for a product code to quickly match up the cost price?

Select the column first by clicking the grey column heading. Then Edit > Find.

Ah, you mean you want a formula to search?

johnnyrocker is correct -

VLOOKUP(value, datarange, data column number in the range, FALSE)

Product code has to be to the left of price for this to work. Otherwise you'll need a combination of INDEX and MATCH.
