Excel-how many times a number appears in a list?

Please could someone tell me the easiest way to count the number of times numbers appear in a list. For example, in a list of test scores I want to find how many people scored 6 marks, how many got 7,8 etc. I've looked at the FREQUENCY function but don't understand the help in Excel.

Thank you

Try the Function "Countif"

Hi, I would personally use the COUNTIF function. When selecting range highlight your list, and the criteria would be the mark ie 6
Hope this helps

Depending on the number of scores you wish to count, a quick way is to use a Pivot Table- there are no formulas to type/setup.

I'm assuming Excel XP but it should work in other versions.

Your data is in two columns called Name and Score for example.

Select your entire list (including the column headers).

From the menu bar select Data> Pivot Table and Pivot Chart Report.

Click Next, then Next again, then Finish.

Drag the Score to Drop Row Fields Here and drag Name to Drop Data Items Here.

Job Done!
