I have found that my "Sum" function in Excel is no longer working - everything else okay. Any ideas how to restore it.

In what way is it not working?

it isn't adding up columns of figures

Are you sure the figures you are trying to sum are not numbers stored as text?

no - has been working okay up until now

Try in a new workbook - type in some numbers and try to sum them. Does it work?

What are you getting in the Sum cell?

Thanks for advice - will try later have to go out now.

Sorry - I was typing as VoG™ posted. His advice will be definitive anyway.

A couple of other things to try.

Say your sum function is =SUM(A1:A10) then what does =COUNT(A1:A10) give? If it gives 0 the figures are not stored as numbers.

If that is the case select the figures, Data > Text to Columns and click Finish.

This is probably a silly thought, but the reason for my question above was to discover whether you're just getting hashes (######) in the Sum cell.

If so, then the cell is too narrow for the figure it needs to display. Just increase its width manually, or double click on the column divider in the header row at the end of the cell.

Sorry if that point is insultingly basic!
