Is there a formula that will find the value within the last populated cell in a row or column?

  VoG II 14:37 11 Mar 05

Last value in Row B

=LOOKUP(9.99999999999999E+307,2:2)

  VoG II 14:38 11 Mar 05

Row 2, I mean

  VoG II 14:42 11 Mar 05

Last value in Column C

=INDEX(C:C,MATCH(0,C:C,-1))

  VoG II 14:50 11 Mar 05

Alternative for last value in Column C (for consistency).

=LOOKUP(9.99999999999999E+307,C:C)

I've just tried the first one =LOOKUP(9.99999999999999E+307,2:2 and it works a treat. If you have the time, could you explain it to me?

Sorry, I should have said - i understand the Vlookup but not the 9.9999 etc.
