want balance column to stay blank until either credit or debit has been entered.

Hi timber. As you have had no replies so far from any Excell experts, I'll tell you how I acheive this result. I use conditional formatting (Format - Conditional Formatting) so that if the content of the cell is almost zero ( e.g. between .01 and -.01) the font colour is white. In this way the zero is still there, but invisible.

Presumably there is a formula in the balance column. Change it so that it reads along the lines of (where I'm assuming B contains credit or debit).

=IF(B1="","", A1+B1)

thanks for your reply but just one of these days can,t get my head around working out the formula

the formula in the balance column at this moment is =SUM(c3+E2-d3)
