Excel calendar incorrect or am I mad?

Hello folks.
I have a simple sheet where I have dates shown in a range of cells (dd/mmm). Adjacent to each date cell I want to show the day so I am using DAY(A1) where A1 would be date cell. Problem is, it is not displaying the correct day, eg 1/5/07 is a Tuesday, my sheet tells me it is a Sunday and continues with the same error if I click and drag formula across. Am I missing something stupid?

DAY(date) returns the day of the month, not the weekday.

=WEEKDAY(A1) will return the day of the week as a number; =TEXT(A1,"dddd") will return the day as Monday, Tuesday etc.

Cancel that folks, I am mad. Should have used 'Weekday' instead of 'Day'

Thanks VoG™, extremely surprised I managed to notice my error before you had chance to solve it. That's a first for me and now a good day.
