ethernet networking

i have two problems.
i have a home network that uses an ethernet hub.
i have set up the network however the only computer that i can see on the workgroup is my laptop, i cant see my desktop on the network group. but i can access files on my laptop from my desktop. why cant i see both computers on the work group.
Also i can only have the network working if i turn off the firewalls.(i have norton antivirus firewall etc).
thanks to anyone who can help...

Have you set any folders as "shared" in the desktop PC? By default File & Printer sharing is disabled in Windows XP (if that's what you are using??) and sharing a folder will prompt you to enable it. Also, try using Windows' Search facility to find the PC by entering either its Name or its IP address.

The fact that you have to disable firewalls means that you haven't configured them to allow access to computers in your local network.

Thanks anyway but i managed to sort it out myself.
The problem was Nbos over IP and my fire wall, but managed to sort out both.
