Ethernet connectivity problem

Connected via Ethernet cable at work. Old laptop worked fine. Switched to new laptop and ethernet connection doesn't work. Not receiving packetsand limited connectivity, no internet and cannot access Exchange server. If I connect to another ethernet socket, works fine. however that socket is already in use by another computer. is there a way to reset the other ethernet socket to allow my new laptop to receive packets and get internet connection?

What Ethernet sockets are talking about and trying to connect to the laptop, the router, on a switch on a hub???

Have you setup the LAN card on the new laptop if not check this posting
