Ethernet connection slower than Wireless?

  Jeffmorgan 14:39 18 Apr 08

Hello, I currently use a BT Voyager 2110 router and it's the old chestnut, pay for 8mb but only get 0.5mb max

I decided to try a speedtest via the ethernet cable and the result bamboozled me (average over 3 tests)

Ethernet average
Download 310 kbps
Upload 101 kbps

Wireless Average
Download 492 kbps
Upload 231 kbps

I am missing something here? as I thought the ethernet would be a more solid performer?
I am a total noob when it comes to routers so apologies in advance

Those sort of figures may suggest you have the MTU set wrongly. For an explanation look at click here . You could try 1500 then 1472 and if your on AOL it's a whole lot lower.

I had the same problem and had to get BT to "reset" the line. My experience of BT modems and routers has been fraught with problems. I changed to a Netgear and all my problems disappeared.

Thanks for the very informative answers.

As you rightly pointd out dms05, it was indeed the MTU settings
