Ethernet Cable won't connect to PC

I have an ADSL Broadband through my BT line from my PC. I have just bought a laptop and want to connect it to the internet, so following advice from PC World have bought a Belkin Wireless Modem Router G+MIMO.

However, I now find that the Ethernet cable supplied with this won't fit to the modem port, or any other port, in my PC. The PC is about 5 years old, running Windows XP: it's not exactly antiquated!

I am already slightly peeved that I had to pay £70 for a piece of kit to connect a laptop to the internet connection I already pay for ... will I now have to buy yet something else to get the Ethernet cable to fit? And why didn't PC World bother advising me about any of this? I have already been back to them once because the first time they sold me a router without the modem, which wouldn't work as my connection is ADSL.

Thanks anybody who can help!!! I am a bit of a beginniner and don't understand much of the jargon.

Sorry .Not much help but there was a thread on here in the last couple of weeks. And the outcome was that you could buy an adapter, Usb to Ethernet. but I think it was about £16 pounds.Maybe someone will be able to supply you with more details.

Thanks both for this advice: I have found an appropriate adapter at one of the websites for £15 and just gone for it.

Clearly this whole business was always going to be costly, but at least I got the laptop for a good price ...
And in future I'll know to seek advice somewhere like this forum rather than thinking that the guys in PC World have the first idea what they're talking about !!!

Thanks

As my PC has only one Network/Ethernet Port as does my bt Voyager 205 Router, on the few occasions that I need too, my laptop connects to the Router by the USB Port.

So how was your pc connected to the BT modem before? Obviously not by ethernet cable.

I know it's too late now, but I'd have suggested an ethernet card for your pc, then you'd have the necessary port to plug in the ethernet cable
