Error message in IE

I need some help to try and sort out my friends
PC.He has windows 98-celeron 600-192mb of ram.
Upon starting this error message appears:-
A fatal error in I.E. has occured at 0028:c0011E36 in VXD VMM 01> + 00010E36.
Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.smitfraud.c
Run available virus and spyware programs to fix the problem.

I have run AVG anti-virus and Ad-Aware.
AVG healed several virus's and trojans, now reports all is ok.
Ad-Aware removed 34 spyware programs, but the error message still appears at start up.
Outlook Express now works (it didn't before)and
his PC seems to be running fine.
Using windows update I.E. was updated to version 6,but the error message still appears.

I thought I might try to reinstall I.E. 6 from the PCA cover disc next.

Can anyone offer some advice please.
Thanks in advance.
