Error Checking Slave Hard Disc in XP

I have a problem when running Windows XP or Norton Utilities Disc Doctor to error check my slave hard disc (drive 'D'= 40Gb) - the master disc ('C'= 80Gb) works OK. The process of error checking the 'D' disc, using either program, takes anything up to 10 hours to complete, whereas checking the 'C' disc takes less than an hour. Can anyone advise why error checking the 'D' disc takes so long and can it be speeded up please ??
