Error 1327: Invalid drive U:\

I have a Toshiba A40 laptop and an external USB drive that I use for backups. The external drive has been set to U: in disk management so that it always has the same drive letter even if I have virtual drives or USB flash drives connected, thereby allowing me to have a shortcut to the drive in my SendTo menu. The problem is that if I want to install or uninstall programs I now have to have the U: drive connected and switched on otherwise I get the invalid drive error message. Anybody got any ideas how I can get around this without having to loose the SendTo shortcut?
