erasing deleted files

After deleting files before passing on acomputer, will defragging the hard drive overwrite the area where they were written to and obliterate them?

Bendigo, no defragging will only rearrange fragmented files, and so may not touch any saved files.
How much effort you want to put into erasing the files depends on how sensitive they are and who you are passing the computer on to.

Killdisk click here

Eraser click here

Will do what you want, eraser will overwrite (many times with x + o's) individual files as well as partitions. Killdisk is run from a boot floppy and a dos interface, this will overwrite the entire disk/partition many times.

Of course both maybe overkill, but these will make it unprofitable for scum to try and recover (assuming thet had the tools for the job).
