Epson scanner will not recognise twain

I have just reinstalled my OS and all progs/hardware after re-formatting my hard drive after due to a serious crash. All is well except for one problem which is driving me around the bend. I have a epson 640u scanner which was working before the reinstall but now although working via "twain aquire" from an application will not work from the scanner buttons or "epson smart pannel". The twain driver is installed and i have tried uninstalling - re-installing standing on one leg whilst trying to reinstall the best driver etc etc. This is a windows problem i am sure as although windows tells me the scanner is operating properly it ain't. windows keeps stating that it cannot find the twain drivers even if i try to extract after the "update driver" "have disc" farce!!
I am on W98se, any ideas please?
ps epson scanner is recognised if i click on "scanner/cameras" and also in the "device managers list"
