Equipment,HP Pavilion 8690 motherboard with Athlon 850mb processor,VIA chipset,256 Ram,Windows XP Pro.
Conected with my PC are Epson Stylus Photo R300 via USB2 cable and Epson Stylus Colour 740 connected via either USB1 or parallel casbles.Problem is,Status minitor 3 in the case of R300 or status monitor 2 in the case of stylus 740 are not working. When opening R300 window and going to printing preferences or progress meter it takes 39-42 seconds to appear with ink levels greyed out.
If I then select the maintenance tag and click on status monitor it takes 2 minutes for the screen to appear with greyed out ink levels, and a further 3minutes 27 seconds for the communication error to appear.I have downloaded Epson's update 19773eu.exe 3 times to no effect. The printers work fine on all print jobs,Phot graphics or text.I have no complaints,I would just like to see the ink levels. Please help Reg Godfrey.

Don`t know your models, but I found that in the case of my two other Epsom's, it was necessary to install the status monitor "after" the installation of the printer driver software. Otherwise status monitor did not work properly.

You don't need Status Monitor 2 and 3. Maybe they are conflicting. Uninstall SM 2 and see if that cures it. I have Epson R200 and Epson 895, but only have SM 3 installed and have no problems.
