Epson Photo EX printer nozzles blocked?

I have been fortunate to be given an Epson Photo EX A3 printer. It had not been used for some time and did not have ink cartidges in it. I used to have one of these printers and had a set of cartidges, and put them in. I already had the driver installed. The ink monitor indicates that both cartridges are full. At first the colour printed reasonably well, but the black seemed to be printing only one band of the nozzle pattern. I cleaned the nozzles using the utility with the printer driver, butthis did not improve things. I then cleaned about four times. Now it is not printing either colour or black. I think maybe the nozzles have become blocked with old ink.

Is there a way of cleaning the nozzles?

I do not have any empty cartridges in which to put solvent/cleaner. OS is XP Pro
