Epson 830 printer - Non Epson Cartridges

  George W. 11:14 03 Jun 03

I recently bought some ink catridges from for my Epson 830 Photoprinter.

These have been excellent (and cheap!), but I notice that when fitting a new cartridge a message appears with words to the effect that

'this is not an Epson replacent and may not give correct colours etc - do you want to continue ?'

How does the printer recognise that this is not the 'Real Thing' ?

Because on the cart there is a chip now, on real epson ones it tells the printer, wht other printers its been in when it was made, exactly how much ink is left etc etc etc.

now with the compatibles they cant do this as the chip information is copyrighted by epson.

I knew these things were chipped to stop home re-filling, but I didn't realise they held so much other information - frightening isn't it ?

(I'll put my paranoia back in it's box now !)
