End Program - rundll32.exe appearing at shutdown

Whenever I close down or re-start my computer, I get a box which says at the top :-

End Program - rundll32.exe ( then below)

This program is not responding.

To return to windows and check the status of the program, Click Cancel.

If you choose to end the program immediately, you will lose any unsaved data. To end the program now, Click End Now.

My questions:-

What does rundll32.exe control or reside or my system?

How do I check the status of the program in Windows, if I click Cancel.

I am using XP Home, and never had the box come up until a few days ago. I know I could just restore my system to before the problem arose, but i'd like to try and understand what's causing the problem.

Thanks in advance.

Did you install or remove any software or hardware before this message started appearing?

Could be many reasons for this - click here - sorry couldn't be more specific!

Worth also to run ad/spyware scans with Adaware & Spybot-S&D to rule out this possibility. To download - Adaware - click here - Spybot-S&D - click here. Also d'load & install SpywareBlaster -click here - it'll block pests in real time as you surf. Remember to check for UPDATES regularly for all of them & BEFORE scanning for the first time. Good luck, G

Go to start run and type msconfig press enter and remove tickes from startup programs that are not needed to start your computer at boot. You can restore these back if you find you need them they are under startup tab

Well, to be more specific - 1. click here & 2. click here.

There's no problem with the click here, Crossbow7 - the site is incredibly slow to load.

VoG™ - put it on again for woodchip's benefit as he had a problem - "Don't know why but cannot get your first link to work only a blank page" - see above. The site IS very slow.
