Enabling Wireless security.

  pcbobby 10:13 14 Mar 09

I have recently installed SWART2-54125 wireless ADSL modem.
All is working well and with good speeds.
I now wish to enable the WEP security. The step by step set up pages on the website are OK, until I reach the section where I have to enter an encryption key.
I have no idea what this means. I did try hard with out success.
I did however, find a website, which could generate a hexadecimal encryption key for a password.

For example, to convert: joebloggs = %6a%6f%65%62%6c%6f%67%67%73

I would be obliged if any members could advise me if I can use this facility.

And, if indeed it does work, do I have to enter the password every time I go online.

Thank you.

Hi pcbobby,

type in your WEB address for your router should be the safecom home page
On your security page click on WPA and then there should be a PSK or Personal Security Key button click on this. You should now see a section where you can add your security key, this must be more than 8 characters long and no more than 64.

Enter your character string or password eg. 'pcbobby_1234' click apply then start up computer log onto your router as usual, you will now be asked for your password key, type in pcbobby_1234 and if there is a tick box to remember password tick this, you will not be asked to enter your key again.

WPA-PSK is far safer than WEP, WEP is poor/broken security.

Good Luck.

Sorry to say, that due to my lack of PC terminology, I completely lost the plot!!

I only managed to lock myself out of the connection.
I reinstalled the modem, so have a wireless connection again.

Perhaps, I may have another go at a later date.
Many thanks to those who took the time and effort to put me on the right path.
