Empty desktop

Twice in the last couple of weeks I have starting up my pc only to be greeted by an empty desktop and no response to the Windows key to start any programs or to restart. The only way I can restart is to use Task Manager. Restarts do not help though, only a System restore to the last System Checkpoint works.
No new programs have been installed and I have run anti malware/spyware programs, but everything looks clean.
Any suggestions please?

You may have been infected with the Blaster virus.

maybe one of your Microsoft updates causing the problem.
Maybe stop the automatic updates and see if it works any better.

I've closed this as everything is working OK - until the next time, that is.

Same here. I downloaded a game, and when I tried to play it, my computer hanged. So I restarted my computer.

However, when I login into my Windows, only my wallpaper appeared. My entire desktop and Start menu plus the toolbar below (stating time date etc) had gone!
