Email and Spell check

I've switched my emails to a laptop with Win XP Home Edition and IE 6.0. When I send an email with spell check checked I get a message saying spell check is stopped do I still wish to send. I have MS Word installed, which I think is needed. Can anyone can help on this?

Also can anyone give me advice about the best program to use for email, address book etc. backup and recovery.

To avoid confusion I should have used "ticked" instead of "checked" in the first line of my first message - sorry

It is Word 97. Previously emails were on Win 98SE and OE 5.5
