E-mailing of attachments (photographs) disconnects

E-mailing of attachments (photographs).
These more often than not disconnect before completion and usual error message appears “Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection….”. I use XP Home (SP2+ updates), Outlook Express, Norton Internet Security, and dial-up modem. The problem persists with two different (free) dial-up servers, even when I disable Norton completely and adjust ‘time-outs’ to maximum. Windows Firewall is not enabled.
The total file size of attachments in any one e-mail is usually in the region of 700-900 KB, and never exceeds 1.5MB. All other aspects of Internet and text e-mails operate normally.
Has anyone any ideas as to the cause of this problem and a possible solution?
