E-mail picture appears without an attatchment.

I opened an email today and a picture appeared, but there was no attatchment present. The picture appeared to be a clickable link to, but I didn't click it.
Surely if this can be done, then the same email could comtain a virus that cannot be detected or am I getting paranoid?

E-mails can be written in HTML, that is the code that webpages are written in. It is likely that the e-mail was written in HTML and included a link to a picture, that you automatically downloaded and displayed. A virus is unlikely to be transmitted in this way since the e-mail client would not understand its file type and would probably prompt the user for action.

Depending on your e-mail client, there is probably a way to prevent pictures being automatically downloaded.

Cheers for that. It's the first time I've had an email like that.
