E-mail password

I have bought a PC with Windows XP Professional on. I have set up the e-mail with my existing account, but the setting doesn't memorize the password for my account. So, everytime that I try to send/download e-mails, I have to input the password manually.
I have done all the obvious: ticking the box "Remember the password", clicking on "Apply" once having set the password. Actually, when I try to send/download e-mails and I get prompted with a window showing my username and requiring the password, the option "Remember the password" with the box to be ticked, is greyed hence unaccessible.
Has anyone ever heard of this problem ? And, is there a way around it ?

Thank you JoeC and AndySD for your suggestion.
They seems to be exactly what I was looking for.
I haven't had the chance to try them yet, but I will let you know ASAP.
Thanks again.
