e mail address endings

hi, regarding g mail addresses: I have one, and it ends .com. Is this the same for other countries, eg would g mail addresses in say south africa end in this way: @gmail.com, or should there be a more country-specific ending? My reason for asking is that I have been given a g mail address to send an e mail to, and the person lives abroad but the address ends .com. Can't help it but I feel a bit suspicious.

No matter where you are in the world,as far as I know, Gmail will end .com

Although the Top Level Domains (TLDs) are (or rather, were originally) nominally country specific (so you ended up with .com being USA, .co.uk being UK, .co.za being South Africa, and so on), there is (often) little to stop businesses and people registering for domains based in other countries. Likewise one can often register for email accounts in other countries and end up with email addresses using TLDs from other countries.

There's nothing untowards about this.
