how do I stop e mails from opening up as soon as I highlight them

This freeware browser has a fabulous built-in email client that highly customisable. If you want to prevent hilighted emails from previewing, you can simply resize the preview window to a tiny strip at the bottom. There are probably other ways of accomplishing what you want, but I haven't found them yet, there are so many options.

Hi, In Outlook Express Click on the 'Tools' menu, select 'Options', click on the 'Read' tab and untick the box 'Automatically download message when viewing in the preview pane'. Cheers, Bill

Do you really mean opeing up, or do you just mean appearing in the preview pane. If you want to close the preview pane - simply go to View - Layout, and untick the preview pane.
