Dynamic IP Address Problem

Hope someone can help with this problem, it's got me pulling my hair out!

I'm trying to connect a PC to the Internet, cabled via Netgear router, but I'm stumped because the dynamic IP address keeps coming up as with a subnet mask of

My router IP address range should be - 254, subnet mask

Now my main PC is working fine, but I just cannot get this other PC to be sensible about the dynamic IP addy.

I've unistalled & re-installed the NIC, reset IP using netsh, even set a static IP etc. Which, sort of helped, but still got DNS error with IE & Firefox. I can ping the router OK with a static IP, but still getting DNS errors.

Sorry if this is rambling, but my noodle is fried.

The PC is Win XP Home (SP2).

Can anyone pls pls help?

Tried a different NIC. Same problem tho'.

Dynamic IP address is different, but still in the wrong range - subnet is still the same as before, wrong!
