Ok so I restored back to DX8.1 by using the uninstaller provided in a previous link (booted in safe mode and ran the batch file)
but when I run the DXDiag I get an illegal op when it does the old system scan.
Not that I am all that bothered but was wondering if something else needed doing to get it back to normal as this never happened b4.

why not try installing DX8.1 over the top of what you have and see if that fixes it.

Is it possible that the version of DXDiag you have changed when you upgraded? It might be worth deleting the one you have before reinstalling 8.1

Do I need to reinstall DX8 again as I reinstalled it from the xp disk and using the uninstaller I also downloaded.

It was installing DX9 that got me into trouble and is why I am trying top reinstall DX8
