DVI->VGA dongle question

I've just bought a new 17" TFT flat panel monitor and I have a Geforce 6600 256mb with DVI output as well as the usual VGA output.
All works well using VGA out to VGA on the monitor, but I thought I'd try out the DVI->VGA dongle that came with the card to plug into my monitor using the DVI out on my graphics card. Except all I get is a screen in shades of blue and black (like a black and white picture but blue and black).

Should this normally work or am I missing something?

Thanks.

I thought the dongle you refer to was jsut to be used on graphics cards that have only DVI output when you wish to connect them to a monitor that only has VGA input. Since you have DVI and VGA on your graphics card and your monitor has I presume only a VGA input theres no point in using it anyway as it won't improve the image.
I might be wrong saying this but thats what I think.
