I am no expert but I normally convert to mpeg2 for burning to dvd to play on stand alone players, you can also use udf which is the base standard.

"Can you tell me what formatthe DVD players we have in our houses use": DVD-Video click here

"can I burn and run a flv or would i have to convert them to another format":
flv's will not play from a dvd data disc,
They have to be converted to a format called 'mpeg-2'.

DVD Flick click here will convert & Burn flv's to dvd that can be played in any domestic dvd player.

By the way, DVD Flick is a Free Program.
