DVD Writers and CD Recording

I made the assumption when I purchased my new PC that a DVD writer will write to a CD. Is this not the case?

I may get shot down in flames but AFAIK most DVD writers can also write CDs, however at slower speeds than stand-alone CD writers.

Spock58 yes a DVD R/RW drive will write to a CD.

Because I'm trying to write to a used CD in a DVD Writer, and getting a message

"Cannot copy <filename>. Files on this CD are read only. You can still copy new files to this writable CD which will replace files already on the disk."

If I put a brand new CD in, I get

"Cannot copy <filename>. The resourse file is in use".

Any suggestions?

Spock58 what software are you using? or are you trying to use the CD as a floppy?
