dvd writer can write and play dvds but

  howard63 12:53 16 Oct 05

cannot read from an ordinary data or audio cd. This is a few weeks old liteon unit. When a cd is put in the unit whirls lights flash and then the screen goes blank. When you remove the cd the screen reappears. Can anyone suggest anything - xp pro amd 64 3500 with 1gb ram. Simple things like cables checked and writer uninstalled done but still the same. All spyware checks show nothing.

is this for all cd's or just home written ones?

if its the home written then it might just be disc compatibility. check the webpage of the writer for any known issues with cd's

if you have nero, run the nero infotool and see what detailed info it can glean from the drive

go into your bios and turn off all the udma, pio etc settings for the dvd, see how it works then.

get this click here and run a check on any good CD - if you get a load of crc errors rather than a simple refusal to read the cd it's almost certainly the drive at fault.
i dont know if it checks dvd's the same way.
