DVD RW drive not recognised

i bought an NEC 2500-A DVD RW drive and installed it into my Dell 4300. i had to disconnect ribbon and power cables to remove old and install new drives. when i turned on p.c. i got "keyboard failure", then when XP (!) loaded, my new drive wasnt recognised, and my existing DVD-ROM drive had disappeared. the package contained nothing more than the drive and a delivery docket. Who can help me? Anyone?

The DVD drive will have a selector on the rear which can be set to Master, Slave or auto select.

If you were replacing a drive with this new one, you should set the selector to the same setting as the old unit.
