I want to buy a DVD-RW and can't make my mind up wether to buy one which I can build into the PC or an external one.
1. What do I have to look for in a DVD-RW

2. Is it simple to put into the PC? If so how is it done?
3. What brands are good?
4. Are external ones more expensive?
5. Can one record on to DVD-R and DVD-RW media, and are there any advantages in a DVD+ DVD-

Many questions
Thanks

1. Buffer size, format supported, speed, reliability.
2. Yes, it is. Having your motherboard manual will be useful for installation though not really necessary.
3. Would suggest NEC, Pioneer, LG.
4. Yes, external is much much more expensive than internal. You could get an OEM DVDRW dual layer for less than £40 now.
5. Most do.

Have a go, DVD r/rw drives are not difficult to install, just follow the instructions. I would suggest buying a retail boxed drive with software to write and play DVDs.

You might have to experiment with the brand of DVD media to find one that works well in your particular drive. Use DVDrw to learn on and DVD+r/-r once you are happy with the process.

Also if you are writing DVDs to play in a domestic player the same advice applies about finding the best brand for you.
