What could cause the following scenario?

DVD software disk is recoginsed, and software can be used.

CD software is recognised.

A DVD Film is ejected after 30 seconds trying to read it.

The same DVD will play on 2 other PCs.

All PCs using XP. Problem DVD ROM is about 4 years old. Other 2 computers are new.

Could the age of the DVD ROM be the problem?

Possibly. Is it a double-layer DVD Film?

The 2 films I've tried are Star Trek Nemesis and Spiderman 2. I really haven't a clue what a double layer film is.

They normally say on the label. A normal DVD disk holds 4.7 GByte data (or so). Some are now available that have 2 layers, so doubling the capacity. The first real use for these has been in movies. Older DVD drives probably can't read double layer disks.

Just checked on a newer PC and disk is 7.2GB, so is clearly double layer. Obviously, this is the problem.

Cheers.
