DVD-ROM not working

If I try to load any software from a disk using the dvd-rom, I get the message that there is a problem with the setup.exe file. If I try to play a dvd on it, it skips through the disk, and then says that the disk is dirty and needs cleaning. Does anyone know what is going on. I have checked in the system manager, and this says that the device is working.

I have a packard bell 1.5ghz, pentium 4, windows ME, 128mb ram, Panasonic 116 dvd-rom.

Had a similar problem with my PANASONIC CD re-writer. It turned out to a mis-alignment with the laser inside the box of tricks itself and needed to be repaired by a dealer. However at a repair cost exceeding £60, I opted to buy a new and problem was solved!!

Thanks for the info. I have an extended warranty, so I will give them a try.
