bought dvd rom and connected it to ide cable.
on this same cable is a cd writer.
both jumpers set to cable select because master and slave doesnt seem to work.
when i reboot and check bios, it is not recognised but in my computer it is recognised but plays eratically through power dvd and win media player. genuine xp os fully updated. what am i doing wrong

fairly sure that you should not have them both on the same ide cable.
try putting your dvd rom drive on the hard drive ide cable set to cable select or whichever is appropriate.
also some drives work better set to cable select and others when set to master etc.

found this on the net Some problems that can be seen from incorrect
cabling include no device detection, misdetection of either device on a shared cable, slow system boot up, system halts while booting, and loss or misdetection of devices on the other IDE channel.
