Is it possible to use a computer as a dvd recorder to,say record tv prgrams. If so what would I need?

You would need a fairly powerful machine, good size HDD and a TV card connected to a decent aerial. If you wanted to put anything onto DVD you would obviously need a burner. You may find the following links helpful, the last is an Ask (Jeeves) search.

IMO you would be better off buying a 'made for purpose' dvd recorder, there are some less expensive ones around now in the supermarkets

I agree. It would be simpler, less open to causing PC problems and probably as cheap in the long term.

The only reason I can see that you may wish to modify is if you need the card to capture video from another source.

If you just want to get it on your hard drive then you can do as Johndrew says If you are thinking of then putting it on dvd you will need further software as it is is not all that straightforward therefore go for the recorder as terry says
