DVD-R Drive won't Boot System

whenever i try to boot from CD-Rom with BIOS set to boot CD-Rom first, it skips the process and boots XP from hard disk. Don't even get the "boot from cd rom" message at startup. Is this due to being DVD-RW drive as i've tried the CD-r in another system and it works fine.

Win XP SP1, XP2600, 512 DDR, Gigabyte GA7-DXR mobo...

Which channel hae you got hte DVD drive on? If it is on one of the Raid channels (the bottom two) although the GA7 will allow optical drives to work, it wont allow booting from them. Try moving it to one of the top two and also check that there is no master / slave conflict on the same channel.
