DVD Player and surround sound set up

Hello all,
I'm after a bit of advice on how and what i require to set up a surround sound system for my recently purchased dvd player, not really wanting to spend a great deal on seperate amplifiers and all the gizmos i was wondering if i could purchase a speaker system that has everything in the box so to speak,i really want to take advantage of the 5.1 sound capabilities of my dvd(this is a standalone unit).I appreciate that this is not a pc related problem as such but i've spent hours in pc world today seeking advice on what and how to purchase a system and was told in so many words to go to Dixons !!!
I have read that certain speaker sets ie Altec Lansing 5100's will do the job as they have built in amps.......any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance Denz
